Why Ignite Change?

Why now?

We launched Ignite Change because now more than ever, we need people to come together to protect what matters most. We value all life and we recognize that a thriving human society is deeply dependent on healthy, diverse ecosystems.

There's no such thing as a single issue-fight.

We face big challenges.

We understand that all of the challenges facing the United States and the planet -- species and habitat loss, global warming, deepening economic inequality, pollution, environmental racism, climate change -- are deeply interconnected.

Now is a critical moment to come together to defend our planet.

Given the depth of the challenges facing us, we believe that small steps won’t cut it. We need bold ideas that move us rapidly toward the solutions we need.

We believe in a life-centered world where governments and people respect wildlife, wildlands, clean air and water, and protect the planet’s rich biodiversity.

Our Vision

Given the depth of the challenges facing us, we believe that small steps won’t cut it. We need bold ideas that move us rapidly toward the solutions we need.

We believe in a life-centered world where governments and people respect wildlife, wildlands, clean air and water, and protect the planet’s rich biodiversity.

Goals:

  • 100% renewable by 2050. At least 80% of current reserves need to stay in the ground to stay under 2 degree Celsius temperature rise, beyond which would be runaway climate catastrophe.
  • Not one more species lost. We have already lost more than 50% of the planet’s biodiversity, and are in what scientists have determined is the sixth mass extinction. We stand for the right of all life to exist and work tirelessly to ensure that every species is protected.
  • End all new fossil fuel leasing on public lands and waters. Public lands and oceans should be protected for wildlife and people for generations to come, not exploited for short-term corporate profit. By ending new fossil fuel leasing on public lands we will preserve these lands and prevent 450 billion tons of carbon pollution.
  • Environmental justice. We strive to ensure a clean and healthy environment for all, especially for those who have traditionally lived, worked and played in areas deliberately targeted for polluting projects and lax enforcement of environmental laws.
  • No Trump Border Wall – Trump’s proposed border wall violates 48 current laws, endangers wildlife, critical habitat, protected public lands, and disrupts communities along its 2,000-mile border. The wall is a symbol of the politics of separation and hate rather and has no place in our borderlands.

These are challenging times.

The Trump administration, a hostile Congress, and their corporate cronies present an unprecedented threat to people, wildlife, clean air, water, and our climate.

If we don’t make a stand now, too many species will go extinct, the climate crisis will become unstoppable, and wild lands will be industrialized, polluted and ruined for generations to come.

We know that the depth of change that needs to happen is beyond the scope of any one organization. By joining Ignite Change, we invite you to take action in your community, to connect with others, and develop your skills as an agent of change.

How is Ignite Change related to the Center for Biological Diversity?

Think of Ignite Change as the organizing wing of the Center for Biological Diversity.

By organizing our members, Ignite Change enhances and strengthens the Center’s existing legal, scientific, political and outreach work. A show of grassroots force in support of our campaigns adds significant fuel, reach and people power to the work.

What we work on:

The issues we work on — including protecting our public lands and oceans from destructive drilling, stopping the border wall, defending endangered species, and advocating for clean energy — may shift but they all focus on protecting and preserving the planet’s unique and fragile biodiversity.

By banding together and taking action at the local level, Ignite Change creates a powerful, visible, sustained national network to pressure decision-makers to save wildlife and the environment. We work on longer-term campaigns and also shorter, more acute actions to respond rapidly to the most urgent environmental threats and opportunities.
